A world of adventure, mischief and magic
On the outskirts of Tokyo, West Coast Brewing has grown into a new force within the Japanese craft beer market. The beer child of high-quality American brewing and fun-loving Japanese culture, West Coast Brewing lives within a world of its own.
Our task was to create the brand and a packaging platform to allow for experimentation and storytelling. Laid back and informal, West Coast Brewing’s visual language leverages the immensely popular Japanese graphic style but within a new format. Starting with the formation of the first character ‘Hop Dude’, we created a world of adventure, mischief and magic.
The adventures of Hop Dude are a mechanism to build organic brand loyalty and collectability. The flexibility of bringing in new characters goes hand in hand with the experimentation, collaboration and limited-edition nature of the brand’s brewing.
Growing from a small industrial estate on the edge of the local marina, West Coast Brewing has grown to over 7 tap room locations across Japan, producing over 170 different beers
Creating the branding for this hotel, our work culminated with an ‘all you can drink’ beer experience with core cans on offer, along with the more premium GMT+9 Cask aged products.
Together we have created hundreds of unique illustrations, each telling the story of the brew and its flavours or its inspiration.
